Review: iOS Game - Trainyard

Trainyard is an interesting puzzle game for iOS. The premise of the game is simple, you must draw train tracks upon which coloured trains travel from a starting point to a depot. Only appropriately coloured trains are allowed in their respective depots. (more after the jump)

It may seem to be simplistic at first, but the complexity of the puzzle starts to show after beating the first few levels. Trains of primary colours can be merged, or intersected to create trains of secondary colours, an there are special painting or splitting blocks as well. As the levels progress, you'll have to think more and more about timing the trains and whether or not to merge them or intersect them.

The game also allows unique solutions to be shared. Hundreds of unique solutions to each puzzle are found on a database at the developers website at http://www.trainyard.ca/solutions. I was amazed to see the beautiful complexity of some solutions to even the simplest of levels. The solutions database is also a good place for help if you ever get stuck.

There are two versions of the game available: Trainyard Express and Trainyard. The express version contains 50 puzzles, while the full game contains 150. Emphasis on full game because the two versions have different sets of puzzles. That's a great move on the developer's part, as there is a lot of value added in purchasing the game. There's definitely no reason not to download the free version, and the full version is well worth the money.

Check the developers website at www.trainyard.ca. Trainyard and Trainyard Express are available on the App Store for $0.99 and free, respectively.
